Foxconn Update

Here’s a great bunch of shots from around Foxconn Shenzhen plant. Obviously this was done with permission and under supervision. There is a factual error I would like to point out: There has, in fact, been a suicide since the nets went up.

  1. WOW, THAT PLACE LOOKS NICE! SOME OF THE ROOMS EVEN HAVE THEIR OWN BATHROOM. LOOKS LIKE THEY EVEN HAVE CABLE/SATELLITE IN THE T.V. ROOM. GOOD VIEW, TOO.

8 TO A TWO-CAR GARAGE? THEY WERE DOING 3 IN A 1/2 CAR GARAGE AT USF. TRY 3 IN A 1 ROOM HOTEL!

YOU SHOULDA SEEN HOW MANY MEXICANS WERE LIVING NEXT DOOR. 4 KIDS, 2 PARENTS, + BROTHERS AND UNCLES. THEIR ONLY VIEW WAS THAT OF A DUMPSTER.

THEY HAVE EVEN GIVEN EVERYONE A TRAMPOLINE RIGHT OUTSIDE THEIR WINDOW.

I CAN WALK A BLOCK AWAY AND FIND PEOPLE LIVING IN A PARK THAT CAN'T FIND A JOB. I'M MORE WORRIED ABOUT THEIR SUICIDE RATE.

  3. Genocide in Africa does not make the Holocaust "less bad".

I've also yet to hear of an apartment that does not let you leave or has you beaten for walking on the grass.

Tune in for a very special Ask Grandpop: I want an iPhone next Monday ;)

  5. LOS ALAMOS WOULDN'T LET WORKERS LEAVE DURING WWII. AREA 51 FLIES CIVILIANS IN FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME. CONTRACTORS IN AFGANISTAN DON'T HAVE ANYWHERE TO GO.

EVEN THOUGH AMERICANS CAN GO HOME, SOME STILL HAVE TO WORK ALL NIGHT. SOMETIMES FOR SEVERAL DAYS STRAIGHT OR 7 DAYS A WEEK. TIED TO A CELLPHONE, E-MAIL, OR LAPTOP.

I WOULD GLADLY BEAT PEOPLE FOR WALKING ON MY GRASS, IF I COULD GET AWAY WITH IT. I DON'T LIKE WALKING ON GRASS, EVER (IT TIRES MY ARMS OUT QUICKLY). SO I CAN'T BLAME THEM FOR THAT.

THE OLD FARTS THAT YELL "STAY OFF THE LAWN, YOU KIDS!" IN USA ARE OLD MEN HIRING MUSCLE TO 'PROTECT' THEIR LAWN IN CHINA. THAT'S SOME EXTREME LAWN CARE.

  6. Wow! So much crazy, I don't know where to start. Not much time with BG's nose running away so I'll just pick the craziest:

EVEN THOUGH AMERICANS CAN GO HOME, SOME STILL HAVE TO WORK ALL NIGHT. SOMETIMES FOR SEVERAL DAYS STRAIGHT OR 7 DAYS A WEEK. TIED TO A CELLPHONE, E-MAIL, OR LAPTOP.

Not even close. No one HAS to work all night. There are laws and agencies that deal with this. They can also LOOK for another job. Many Foxconn employees (allegedly) cannot leave. Makes it hard to find work.

I can also pretty much guarantee you that anyone tied to a smartphone or laptop is making more than $140 a month (even after adjusting for standard of living). Comparing the situation of Chinese factory workers to US executives is asinine.

I also have some inside info about another semiconductor manufacturer with plants in China. The Foxconn conditions are NOT "business as usual". There are fucking suicide nets on the buildings for crying out loud!

I'm glad you posted those income figures. Foxconn is moving factories to Vietnam now because it is cheaper. Intel too. Foxconn has also started to use more unpaid interns to save costs. I'd love to see that brochure!

Also, to reiterate, a human rights violation is no less of a human rights violation just because it is happening elsewhere as well.

...and your grass sucks! Anyone stomping on that is doing you a favor ;)

  7. HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS? REALLY? FREAKIN _DUH_!

SO THEY PUT UP SUICIDE NETS. YOU WOULDN'T EVER SEE THAT IN AMERICA, BECAUSE IT'S NOT THOUGHT TO BE COST EFFECTIVE. ESPECIALLY IN THIS JOB MARKET (HAH!). SUICIDE NETS ARE PHYSICAL PROOF THAT THEY DO NOT WANT THEIR WORKERS TO DIE.

SHENZEN IS A HUGE CITY WITH MANY OPPORTUNITIES.

YOU'RE TELLING ME THAT THEY ARE TAKING PEOPLE OFF THE STREET AND THROWING THEM IN TECH WORK CAMP PERMANENTLY. NOT BUYING THAT LOAD OF CRAZY.

CHINA SHOULD IMPROVE THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS? YEAH, DUH. AMERICA, TOO. AND EUROPE. AND AFRICA, ASIA, CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA. BUT NOT ANTARCTICA - THEY MUST SUFFER.

NIXON OPENED TRADE WITH CHINA DECADES AGO. THERE WERE MUCH WORSE HR VIOLATIONS THEN - AND AMERICA WAS IN A BETTER POSITION TO DICTATE FOREIGN POLICY.

IF YOU ARE SAYING DON'T USE THEIR PRODUCTS, YOU HAVE ONE STRAPPED TO YOU! (THE ONE ON YOUR ARM...)

SO SHOULD WE STOP ALL TRADE WITH CHINA? NO, THEY'LL JUST SELL TO ANOTHER COUNTRY. IF IT REDUCES THEIR OUTPUT, THAT'S MORE UNEMPLOYED CHINESE. WHEN TOO MANY PEOPLE POINT THIS OUT, THEY'LL JUST MOVE PRODUCTION ANOTHER LOCATION WITH WORSE CONDITIONS, LOWER PAY AND NO SUICIDE NETS.

VIETNAM, HUH? THEN CAMBODIA OR LAOS. MAYBE BOLIVIA OR PARAGUAY..
AFRICA IS RIPE FOR EXPANSION, BUT YOU'RE GONNA NEED SOME GUNS. THE WORK WILL GET DONE, THAT'S WHAT HUMANS DO.

I KNOW NOT OF THESE FIGURES THAT YOU MENTION. THEY ARE NOT IN THIS POST. I ALSO HAVE NO DESIRE FOR iPHONE, iTOUCH, iPOD, iPAD.

WORK IS WORK, NO MATTER WHO IS DOING IT. IF A U.S. WORKER IS WORKING 168 HOURS A WEEK, THEY ARE WORKING TOO MUCH. EVEN IF THEY ARE GETTING PAID MORE TO DO SO.

IF A U.S. COMPANY CAN GET AWAY WITH THAT IN THE US, THAT'S A HR VIOLATION HAPPENING RIGHT HERE.

IF WE CAN WORK U,S, WORKERS 168 HOURS A WEEK - WHY WOULD WE BE COMPLAINING ABOUT OTHER COUNTIRES?!?! WHAT GIVES US THE RIGHT?

THEY CAN QUIT IN THE US IF THEY DON'T LIKE IT - RIGHT? WELL, NOT IF YOU CAN'T MAKE A LIVING OTHERWISE. NOT IF YOU HAVE KIDS, DEPENDENTS, OR A MORTGAGE. NOT IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIME TO LOOK FOR ANOTHER JOB, OR THERE ISN'T ANOTHER JOB.

I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT U.S. EXECUTIVES - SO TO ASSIGN ASININITY ABOUT YOUR ASSUMPTION WOULD BE ASININE.

  9. The "figures" were the ones YOU linked to in your sig "NO CHINESE IT RECESSION".

Foreign policy? This is about corporate responsibility. Not just Foxconn, but Apple; the company so favored by educators and intellectual snobs. If they were making wine over there everyone would have boycotted it a year ago. But its not wine. Its the favorite toy of doctors and lawyers. A toy with no equal until recently.

Again, you cannot be forced to work 168hrs. in America or Western Europe. Period. I've actually worked for a Big Blue International Business Machine company. I've got a fairly good base of knowledge here. (Tangent: You would not BELIEVE how much time the Italians and French get off! Usually you can't even be laid off in France).

The comparison to execs is due to the fact that low level employees NEVER get any means to work remotely. Heck, you usually even make the grunts buy their uniforms. You sure don't give 'em Blackberries! You gotta be White Collar. Along with that also comes stock options, profit sharing, and 401k. All kinds of backup monies.

All you keep doing is pointing out how hard other people have it. That STILL does not make the conditions at Foxconn less deplorable. A NORMAL factory job doesn't even compare to the conditions of a high tech production facility in China let alone college dorms, apartments with large families, or people with cell phones and laptops.

  10. This year 17 workers at Foxconn Shenzhen have felt they have had no other choice but to throw themselves out the window of their dorm and hope they die.

Go read that last line again. Get it yet? 17. For a cheap company to keep up with the annual demand for the latest iPhone, conditions have become so extreme that 17 people believed that the best answer was to kill themselves. Why? Google "foxconn report" because you obviously haven't followed a link from here. If all it takes to erase that fact is a couple of pics from an admittedly fine looking dorm to convince you that everything is a-okay there, then... well, Congrats! You're part of the problem. Go back to watching Family Guy and yelling at the kids on your lawn :)

And when the tired old "OTHER PEOPLE HAVE IT HARD" drum busts, your Troll-Fu fails at the most base level:

IF YOU ARE SAYING DON'T USE THEIR PRODUCTS, YOU HAVE ONE STRAPPED TO YOU! (THE ONE ON YOUR ARM...)

Yep. The 3rd hand iPod bought via Craig's List. Got me there! Shoulda just let it end up in a landfill with the mountain of last year's iPhones rather than picking it up on the private market and helping a 20yr old kid fix his car. Shame on me :( You'd almost think I was recycling.

I DID make him come down $25. I'm not running a charity here!
