Voice to Tweet for Egypt from Google

Official Google Blog: Some weekend work that will (hopefully) enable more Egyptians to be heard
We worked with a small team of engineers from Twitter, Google and SayNow, a company weacquired last week, to make this idea a reality. It’s already live and anyone can tweet by simply leaving a voicemail on one of these international phone numbers (+16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855) and the service will instantly tweet the message using the hashtag #egypt. No Internet connection is required. People can listen to the messages by dialing the same phone numbers or going to twitter.com/speak2tweet.

We hope that this will go some way to helping people in Egypt stay connected at this very difficult time. Our thoughts are with everyone there.

The Melancholy of Growing Up Otaku

Before Day One, the sound of a UPS employee huffing and puffing on the porch would have heralded orgy of nerding out. What could it be? Durarara!! is getting a North American release. Is it an upgrade year? Seems like refurb Android tablets should be showing up on Woot soon. Maybe Liz scored a Bag Of Crap last Woot Off!

Now?

5 Reasons Why Minecraft Rules

In no particular order:

-Dream it, Do it
javaw 2011-01-28 21-44-15-41This is my primary residence (of 3). That whole mountain has been hollowed out and there is an extensive tunnel system including a dungeon I’ve been strip mining I call The Deep Mines. Above you see my Skybridge system, and on the beach, my portal to hell.

-The Horror
Minecraft may very well be the most terrifying game ever created. Minecraft will kill you. Often. Frequently without warning. Yeah, the exploding Creepers will get you, but so will tunneling into an underground lake and drowning Disturbing a single block of sand in the wrong place will burry you alive. Minecraft is the ultimate survival horror game. And there is no one who can help you.

-Your ears are more usefull than your eyes
javaw 2011-01-28 21-16-30-86
Do you see the horde of zombies out there? I hear  them. I also know if I wait here  a moment I can saunter right out whistling Dixie. Soft piano music plays as the morning sun sets the zombies alight. I listen to them burn from the safety of my hole.

-Face the Consequences
javaw 2011-01-28 21-16-45-79
Here’s the game menu. No save. No load. You die, you drop your stuff and respawn at the same point. The world persists, but you are stripped naked and dropped back off at the beginning. Keep plugging away at it, and you’ll finally be able to take a stand. Make a stand, and you can work towards taming this randomly generate world; Mining and Crafting it to your will. You will die often, but every life WILL leave its mark.

-Punch a Cow
javaw 2011-01-28 21-52-23-01
Aww, yeah! Few things I love more than punching some big, stupid Minecraft cow right in his blocky little face!

Qwiki Alpha: A wiki that reads to you

Back in my day, this would be called a multimedia encyclopedia. Anyhow, be sure to check out Qwiki next time you are looking something up. Qwiki plays a slide show of pictures while reading a minute or so worth of text on the topic. It’s a fantastic site with an extensive number of entries.

Change Your Amazon Password! Now!

Ugh! Don’t have time for this today! Make time, damnit!
Lifehacker is reporting that there is a flaw in older Amazon passwords where “anything after the first eight characters doesn't matter so much. For example, if your password was password1234567890, someone could enter passwordpizza and get into your account all the same.” Granted this only applies to Amazon passwords older than a couple of years, but why take the risk?
Let me also take the time to lecture on creating strong passwords. DO NOT USE: your name, your maiden name, your kids name, birthdate, pet’s name, or any of the rest of that personal information you posted all over your Facebook profile. Duh. Its bad enough that your Facebook profile probably contains all the info needed to reset your passwords (ie. Secret Question: What is your pet’s name), you don’t need to make it your password as well.
Here! I Googled ‘strong password’ for you. Should be some tips there. Don’t use an online program to generate your password either (like that first link).

Fallout “Fan” Film: Nuka Break

Who’d a thunk I’d get to post 2 pro quality fan films in as many days? Youtube is jumping!

Now, you may notice I put quotes around Fan. One thing stuck out to me. Vic Mignogna. Yep, one of the biggest names in English anime voice overs (Ed in Full Metal Alchemist) is the junk dealer. Couple of the other actors show up on IMDB as well. This is certainly a much more “pro” group than the Beyond Black Mesa folks.

Put a Coffee Filter to Work on Your TV Screen

Seeing as how we recently discussed this, I just had to post.

Put a Coffee Filter to Work on Your TV Screen | Apartment Therapy Unplggd: "It turns out that those little rippled cones of blotting paper that filter your morning brew are perfect for clearing the dust from your television screen or computer monitor.
They'll catch the dust and cut static on the screen, all without leaving behind any fibers like paper towels would."

Also be sure to check the comments on the original article (linked above) for several other ways to re-purpose coffee filters around the home.

Do Watch: Beyond Black Mesa

Runs about 12 minutes. Set in the Half Life sci-fi universe, the film follows Adrian Shephard as he and his fellow resistance fighters struggle to deliver a message about the incoming Alien Combine invasion. The project took the seven film makers two years and $1200 to make.

Do not miss this wonderful sci-fi (SyFy?) short!

Warner Bros. to Make American ‘Death Note’ Movie

Wraaaagghh! I make one little Death Note joke at the end of the latest episode of the “brilliant new internet comedy” Ask Grandpop and look what happens?! I’m sorry. I take full responsibility. If you haven’t seen (at least!) the 2 live action Japanese movies, now is a good time to check them out.

Warner just hired the writer of Lethal Weapon to write the American version of Death Note. Enjoy it while you can. Soon an image of Samuel L Jackson as Ryuk scream “Yeah! Write out all dem motherf@#&ers! Whoo!” is burned into your brain.

Here is Your World Without Net Neutrality

We’ve talked about it enough. Its now 2011. Time to see the reality, complements of MetroPCS (via Geek.Com):

While so far net neutrality seems to have remained intact, one wireless carrier has taken the decision to test the boundaries in a bid to squeeze more money out of its customers. That company in MetroPCS.

If you want to sign up for a 4G LTE wireless plan with MetroPCS you now have to decide how much content you want access to. For $40 per month you can watch as many YouTube videos as you like and browse the web freely. But if you try and watch a video through a service other than YouTube it will not play because your plan does not cover it.

Here’s the breakdown of the three plans MetroPCs is offering:

  • The $40 service plan offers unlimited talk, text, 4G Web browsing with unlimited YouTube access.
  • The $50 service plan includes the same unlimited talk, text, 4G Web services and unlimited YouTube access as the $40 plan. Additional features include international and premium text messaging, turn-by-turn navigation with MetroNAVIGATOR™, ScreenIT, mobile instant messaging, corporate e-mail and 1 GB of additional data access, with premium features available through MetroSTUDIO™ when connected via Wi-Fi, including audio capabilities to listen and download music and access to preview and trial video content.
  • The $60 service plan provides the same premium features as the $50 plan, plus unlimited data access and MetroSTUDIO premium content such as 18 video-on-demand channels and audio downloads.

Ultimately MetroPCS is only offering a complete Internet experience for $60.

The new plans will initially be offered in Boston, Dallas-Fort Worth, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia, Sacramento and San Francisco. Atlanta, Jacksonville, Miami, Orlando and Tampa will come online at some point this year.

Ask Grandpop : Tron Evolution

No post production this time. Xtranormal now charges for everything, including publishing. Seeing as how I received very little feedback on this, I can’t justify the buck it would cost to get the HQ render. Its also widescreen now, so I’d have to re-do all the title assets… Really loved doing this crap Sad smile

Anyway, here’s a cartoon I made before I was bitter and weepy:

Minecraft is GUO’s GotY?! WTF? Hax!

Minecraft was available for purchase in 2009! Technically, it still hasn’t been released, you just get to play it in alpha/beta for a preorder!

I don’t care. Minecraft is the Game of the Year pick. 2010 was the year of Minecraft. Duh.

Besides, this is nothing compared to when I called Oblivion GotY 2 years in a row Winking smileNo one read this site back then. LOL

Growing Up Otaku’s Game of the Year 2010

I know you know no one knows better, you know? So, no breakdown, no pussyfooting, no list or separation or platform bias. Games are games. American or Russian, Xbox or iPhone, Digital or cardboard. This is GUO’s Game of the Year!

Minecraft – PC (website)

Unless you were a 4chan member with a shiny new Low Orbit Ion Cannon, no other game this year has been able to spark the imagination like Minecraft. Just doodling in 3d or running for your life from creepers, Minecraft provides an experience that harkens back to the glory days of PC gaming. Nearly infinite in possibilities, Minecraft tells you nothing. And then punishes you for your ignorance. Or not! Enemies are disables with one click when you create a new, random world so you can build with blocks in peace forever. Wanna import the deck plans of the Enterprise and have a look-see? Done. Build an 16-bit computer. Yep. Minecraft lets you play your way.

Also, it WORKS. So many games every year do not. BIG games. Multi million dollar games. Broken from the get go. Minecraft tells you up front that it is not done (and, in fact, only reached beta status last week) yet it is still not the technical train wreck of Fallout or the busted multiplayer of Call of Duty. Yep, Minecraft, created by ONE GUY, has fewer technical issues than the billion dollar grossing CoD:BlOps.
