Continued from here. Just as real.
Disney’s new film Cars 2 is rated G. It should not be. I have discussed the improper rating of Disney’s films with the Mrs for several years now. This latest release pushes the envelope. Cnet editor Molly Wood sums this up in a except from Buzz Out Loud #1498 below.
I DEFINITELY need to spread a little love to that other FPS that went free to play last week.
The ArmA series has been a cult hit with PC games. Named the '13th best PC game of all time’ by PC Gamer Magazine, ArmA is the spiritual successor to Operation Flashpoint and depicts realistic modern combat. And I do mean realistic. This is not another Call of Honor where people run 30mph and shotgun each other in the face. ArmA is a game that requires tactics, patience, and, most importantly, cover.
ArmA 2: Free is also unique in its free-2-play business model. It really is free! No optional subscriptions, micro transactions, or in-game currency purchases. A credit card isn’t even required. This is the full multiplayer suite, complete with scenario editor(!), ripped from the original retail release of ArmA 2.
How do they make money? Well, the game eschews a few features to keep the download size small. The free version does not include the retail release’s highest graphics settings, mod support, or single player. Want those? Go buy the retail version! Easy breezy.
Hit the ArmA 2: Free website for more info and download links.
No arguments, no pampering, no special needs, no embarrassing tabloid stories. The reasons for corporations to switch from people to programs as spokes models are legion. Here is one more:
What if your spokes person in a little too young for your target demographic? What about being a little too ‘ethnic’ for your regional advertising exec’s taste? In the olden days, you would acknowledge someone made a mistake and you’d grab yourself a new celeb. In the 21st century, you just change you virtual idol. Square peg doesn’t fit in the round hole? Just trim off the corners and get a bigger hammer. She’ll fit eventually!
Here is the Miku that set Japan on fire:
…and here we have some images Toyota was proud enough of to post on their website and Facebook pages. This first one is the banner on http://www.toyota.com/corollamiku/
And this one is is a “special collectors edition print of Hatsune Miku” being offered with select magazines:
Had a little issue after the server updated Sunday. Looks like everything is back online, but I had to swap out a corrupted/incompatible file. Things seem okay now, but there is a surprising amount of ice in the water and the spawn point has moved. The spawn is now conveniently located next to the expansive manor I call Casa del Lou
I was getting a [SEVERE ERROR] in the server console after the last update. Don’t remember the exact error. Generic ‘unexpected exception’ type things. To fix this, I renamed the world folder, restarted the server to generate a new world, copy pasted the file ‘level.dat’ file from new world to old, deleted new world folder and renamed original back to ‘world’. All fixed other than the spawn point. And the ice. Biome setting may be wrong. Whatever. Probably gonna have to reset the server after 1.0 comes out in Nov anyway.
First Big Wheel and Epic Cupcake eating!
BG’s birthday is Thursday, but the Mrs and I decided to get a jump on things this weekend. I just stapled together the raw footage I grabbed from the day. Wanted to get some video of her playing in the hose and baby pool, but BG reminded me that I needed to put the iPad away after I nearly sprayed it with the hose ;)
It's kinda long with no frills or any really exceptional scenes, so feel free to skip around.
I also uploaded a bunch of backlogged baby photos. You can check them out here.
PS: I REALLY cannot stand Picasa’s desktop client anymore!
Definitely worth checking this one out. This is the ‘spiritual successor’ to Baccano! but much less violent, yet no less twisted. Show time is 12:30AM EDT. Shows are usually available streaming on http://www.adultswim.com/ following broadcast.
Wikipedia explains the show thusly:
“Mikado Ryūgamine is a young man who longs for the exciting life of the big city. At the invitation of his childhood friend Kida Masaomi, he transfers to a school in Ikebukuro, Tokyo.
“Masaomi warns him about people he doesn't want to cross in the city: a violent man dressed like a bartender, an information merchant, and a mysterious gang called "Dollars." And to top it off, Mikado witnesses an urban legend on his first day in the city: the "Black Rider," the supposedly headless rider of a black motorcycle.
“The narrative follows all of the characters equally, showing how their lives intersect, creating a greater plotline from what each character knows about a common incident.”Or via Qwiki
It’s nice that I’m getting all this last minute parenting stuff done before BG moves! Just finished off putting together a big wheel for her 2nd birthday. I’ll try to remember to grab some video this weekend. In the meantime, here’s a brief conversation with BG from last night just before bath time:
“Happy, happy, happy.”
“Is Chloe happy?”
“No. Pa-Pa happy?”
“Yes, Pop-Pop is happy.”
“Pa-Pa happy,” points to me, “Then Chloe happy,” points to herself.
It’s amazing. Her vocabulary seems to double every week for the past couple months. Chokes me up just reading that, LOL. Yesterday at school they told her she had all the juice she could for the day. Chloe’s response? “Bye-Bye, juice. See you tomorrow.”
Edit: Just got a call from Baby1’s Grandma. Cami apparently used a “danger keyword” when talking to her on the phone. Here comes another round of DCF/CPS rigmarole. Been a “DCF week” since last Friday. Not supposed to be a DCF week. Grr. Hopefully it is gonna be a 4-year old version of trouble, ie. Didn’t get strawberry milk for a week and had to drink white milk.
Edit 2: Seems everything got blown out of proportions, as usual. Sarah had been standing up Cami’s grandmother all month for visitation. Grandma got pissed and, rightly, decided to make a stink. Could have done without all the crazy made-up crap, tho.
I asked Chloe again tonight if she was happy. “No,” she said. “Chloe.”
Edit 3: BG has the squirts. Feels like it’s been too long since I’ve mentioned baby poop.
UPDATE: The bottom has fallen out of the Manconomy! TF2 is now free forever! No subscription model! TF2 will be funded solely by Valve’s unnecessary micro transactions. Seems everyone loves overpriced hats! Who knew?
Also just released for TF2, the latest in Valve’s ‘Meet the Team’ series, Meet the Medic. One of my favorites! Even features one of my favorite Payload maps! And my evil laugh. And… Hey… That’s a me, Medico!
One last gasp to round out Virtual Idol Week! Here is a fVisiON 3D display prototype. This table provides a glasses-free 3d Mini Miku ready to perform for your Star Wars figures and shot glasses.
Singer and anime voice actress Yuu Asakawa provided the voice samples used in the construction of the virtual idol Vocaloid2, Megurine Luka. Behold the spectacle as Yuu confronts Project Diva, an arcade video game full of Vocaloid hits… and doesn’t know any of the songs sung using her voice.
Yes, space spiders. Two golden orb spiders, Gladys and Esmerelda, boarded the ISS as cargo from the last shuttle mission to “test” how spiders might behave differently in microgravity. Golden orb spiders are different in the fact that when on Earth they spin semi-circular webs. No so with these two brave spidernauts! They spin fully circular webs in space. I have embedded the time lapse below, but you can find tons more real-time video at BioServe Space Technologies' YouTube channel.
Glico wisely realized they shouldn’t keep all the fun of concocting tomorrow’s pop stars to themselves. As part of their advertising venture with Japanese music group AKB48, Glico has opened a site where you can mix-n-match your own personal AKB48 girl. Note the Sound Off button location. You’ll need it
ANN is reporting that the newest member of the Japanese pop group AKB48 will be a virtual idol. Aimi Eguchi is a composite of six real-world AKB48 members' faces with the voice of an intern. AKB48 currently has 58 members in 4 teams.
To think that people complained about celebrities creating an impossible image to live up to before! Now we can combine celebrities or just whip them up from scratch. Seriously, who looks through the AKB48 roster and says, “Ya know, there just isn’t one here I like. Let’s Frankenstein up a new one.”
Since the Woot sale on these, I’m sure that there are going to be a lot of folks looking for a little help. As a veteran of The Cruz Wars, I figured the least I could do was share my personal experiences with those unfortunate enough to have purchased one.
1. You get what you pay for: If you think you just bought an iPad with a crappy screen for $85, drop this thing off at your local charity now. You made a mistake. Get over it and move on. That said, it can be a fun device for reading books, web surfing, and email.
Cnet has been so kind as to put together a spreadsheet detailing the Great 2011 Hackathon as we know it thus far. All of the whos, whats, whens, and whys, even links to related articles. Check it out.
Sega sent out a newsletter to customers of its “Sega Pass” system with the following message:
“We have identified that a subset of SEGA Pass members emails addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were obtained. To stress, none of the passwords obtained were stored in plain text.”
Been working on this one for a while and it isn’t getting any better. Try to enjoy
I have setup a Minecraft server for one and all to enjoy. Simply connect to ryte2byte.blogdns.com from multiplayer. I haven’t tried it myself yet, but I did take the first screenshot of this brave, new world. All server settings are whatever the defaults are. I’ve just been getting it working. Will look into configuration later. Don’t get too attached. I still need to see what the system/ bandwidth load is.
Live in your world, dig in mine.
Well, that latest Baby Court results are in and guess what? Nothing new. Another 3 months of visitation. Visitations are going to be getting gradually longer, but that’s about all that is new. The WhompRat popped his head out and saw his shadow, thus 3 more months of parenting for Grandpop.
“Let's see, Sega had Mario and Sonic Go Back to the Olympics Again, Ubisoft had Just Dance 3 and I think that's pretty much the complete list of third-party Wii titles on the E3 show floor. Practically the only games that software makers are producing on Nintendo's aging platform are B-team licensed titles; the days of arthouse motion games like Okami and MadWorld are well and over.
Nintendo itself showcased a handful of high-quality games like The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Kirby and the truly fantastic Rhythm Heaven, but three games can't carry Wii until the launch of Wii U sometime in 2012. We hope Nintendo of America at least will not pass on releasing the excellent Japanese RPGs Xenoblade and The Last Story in America, but with the U.S. branch's spotty release record, who can say?—Chris Kohler”

Honestly, if you haven’t been following the free, live, online circus that is the Twitter feed of hacker group Lulz Security (@lulzsec), you are missing out! While skimming today a little something caught my eye:
You might hate general Facebook users, but Facebook is like the Gibson on steroids for defensive prowess...The Lulz Boat
If you try to snack on Facebook's innards, it unleashes phantom anti-hacker arms that tear you limb from limb while boiling your bones. The Lulz Boat
Best job in the world, man. Best job in the world.
One of my top 3 games of all time, Star Control II a perfect storm of sci-fi gaming delight. It never should have worked. Take the sprawling, galaxy wide story akin to Babylon 5 or Deep Space 9 and play it like Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy.
Quite a week. Been trying to keep up with the E3 news, but BG is home for the rest of the week. It’s nice to have her home without being sick! Also, close enough to Mission Accomplished. The first 2 days is all the big, new stuff. It’ll be a week before the interesting indie stuff starts to bubble to the surface.
DCF court stuff this week, too. You remember those! That’s where everyone gets a wound up, nothing ever changes, and we go back to living on borrowed time for another 3 months until the next court date. It has been the same story for… 3 years now. LOL. Don’t know why I still get worked up.
And F U Google, you owe me $3.50. This is pop culture, everything here is linking to a commercial.
Elizabeth busted me “not having the E3 spirit”. Other than the Wii 2, I’m just not feeling the magic pixie dust this year.
For having the marketing spin of being a fun family device, most iDevice accessories are bland, practical affairs with all the style of a boardroom meeting. Oh, sure, maybe your rubber band case in pink or… seafoam, but that’s about the extent of the whimsy.
Say ‘Hi’ to iGuy! Available in three colors, iGuy Standing Cover for iPad 1 & 2 is a lightweight foam standing case. Get your iPad ready to lead the Robot Revolution!
iGuy is $40 from Speck and is available in… OMG, I hadn’t read this part yet. Okay, hold my hair in case I throw up. Ready?
iGuy retails for $39.95 and is available in your choice of Lime… Mango… or… Peacock.iGuy Products on Amazon.com

Is it a console? A controller? Who cares! It’s new and cool and will probably cost too much! Mario!
E3 Press Conf. is being re-aired on http://e3.nintendo.com/
Giggle. New console. This is why we play the game
This guy I know says the girl he was dating's Uncle Larry saw a memo that said the new Nintendo console can heal a broken heart.
N starts off with Miamoto acting humble and offering up, like, 4 Zelda games. Mostly remakes. 20mins? Gads. No real gameplay shown from ANY of them.
Mario, Mario Kart, Starfox, Icarus, etc. for 3DS. You know, all the crap they should have had for the system launch? Coming for XMas. Finally. I think they’re e-shop just launched today too. Sure didn’t pay to be an early adopter on that one.
Still not showing anyone playing anything. Unusual not to see a stage full of people swinging Wiimotes
Excitebike is 27 years old. LOL.
OOoooo, Pokedex 3D for FREE!!! Even has augmented reality (ie, put little pictures in real world and camera will show Pokémon there).
New console = Wii U
It’s a Wii Tablet!
It looks good! Brilliant peripheral, but definitely a peripheral. The can’t let it crowd in on the DS market. Kinda like the modern take on the Dreamcast’s VMU.
Ooo, nevermind. They just said they’re gonna put Smash Brothers on this thing. More than a VMU. Nope, its also a full on system. It’s the iPad of the Nintendo ecosystem.
They can’t seems to make up their minds if they are going to call it a controller or console. They put out a product they’re afraid to classify. THAT shows innovation!
Showing a lot of hardcore, violent games. Marketing for early adopters. Not gonna be cheap.
I can’t help but think that this is what the Playstation Vita (NGP) should have been instead of the Franken-PSP they put out.
Nintendo says now have 4 platforms: DS, 3DS, Wii, and Wii U.
They didn’t even bring the new hardware out on stage WTF!
Got to this party late. Fanboy vs. Father and all that. Now watching in 3 separate timelines. Woooooo. All this is mostly just for the Mrs. anyway
Satisfactory handling of PSN hack issue. Only a little giggling.
Uncharted is awesome. Duh. Not been mentioning most of the ‘duh’ moments. Like ‘new Ass. Creed/Halo/CoD game rocks; Looks just like last one’. Duh.
Lots of non-playable, coming in 2012 games this year.
A FPS shooter MMO interfaced with Eve Online at the same time? Pfft! They better not hype that one too much. If they manage to get all that crap working, it is going to take another year (at least) to meet expectations.
Really teasing the NGP.
Good idea! Make console gamers buy a dedicated monitor. Why not? $500 too much tho. Sony is always good at pricing themselves at the edge of the market.
NGP is now called Playstation Vita. Been rumored.
LOL!!!! Vita needed the fastest mobile network, so we partnered with… … AT&T. LOLLLOLOLOL01!
Who wants to go link all their social networking accounts to the PSN right now? Anyone?
That’s one amazing screen on Vita for them to be filming right off of it so well. Can’t be production model. Still impressive for such a small screen. Might be OLED. Liz’s Samsung Android phone looks pretty amazing. Still not that good tho.
So… Mod Nation Racers is not the same as Mod Nation Racers on PS3 or PSP. WTF! Get a new name then. Also, looks like the same game to me.
Touchscreen controls seem bolted on by the game code as Move controller.
Vita is $250 wifi/$300 3G?! Score.
Ya know, Vita is the only Sony device they didn’t pimp/support 3D.
Short show for Sony. No sales numbers. First show they didn’t mention the PS2.
I can’t tell Mass Effect 3 from any of the other 3rd person space marine shooters anymore. That series sure has changed.
EA is pimping their Origin download store constantly.
You can have fist fights with cops in Need for Speed? Huh? What is going on with that game? QTE on-foot segments in a racing game. I don’t know… At least it’s something new.
Kingdoms of Amalur : Reckoning is one of those dream team products that should should have been one of the most epic creative team ups of all time but always ends up failing.
Overstrike = Win! Especially coming from the minds behind Ratchet & Clank.
Battlefield 3 getting cross platform open beta in September.
I’ll be updating this through the show. Refresh at will
Do all the Modern Warfare games start on a boat?
When did Tomb Raider become a survival horror game? Crazy enough to work. Looks good.
Mass Effect 3 will have Kinect features! LOL! The ‘Net is gonna be LIT UP with whiney fanboys tonight! lololololol01101
They put this horrible big screen right behind the speaker and its just a showcase for poor streaming quality video is.
GAAAAAAAASP! Minecraft is coming to the XBox 360 with Kinect support. Never would’ve guessed that. I still can’t believe that Minecraft has as big of a PC following as it does, I really can’t see XBoxers wanting to play a Wii version of it.
So, meh. The usual. Halo, Fable, Forza, Gears, and, thanks to Kinect, a fistful of Wii games.
Shoulda watched WWDC instead
Banner didn’t show under Internet Explorer 9. Oops. Who knew. Shoulda checked sooner as about 33% of my traffic is from some form of IE. Gonna do up a better one later, but this fixes the problem. Now I can sleep easy knowing the Giant Fire-Breathing Robot Baby watches over all.
It’s not meta, but… hmm… there almost certainly is some kind of super nerdy term for blogging your web surfing. And starting on a tangent. Hm? Oh, yeah, succulent plants.
So I found myself reading an article about growing plants in a tea tin, which led to an article about growing plants in Altoids tins, which led to looking at pretty pictures of “succulent plants” which, sadly, do not appear to be very tasty.
*edit* Qwiki embed totally busted on iDevice. Sorry.
So, yeah, cacti and aloe. Meh. Until you see something like this:
Now, mind you, these things don’t need… ya know, “care”. I’ve had a couple of these on the front porch planter since forever, but just the boring green stuff. I really like the fat leafed purple & blue stuff. Reminds me a lot of a coral reef. Of course it is supposed to.
On the night of June 3rd, @LulzSec Tweeted a link to the following statement:

They now treat hacking as an act of war. So, we just hacked an FBI affiliated website

"Starting at 3:35 UTC today (6:35am local time), approximately two-thirds of all Syrian networks became unreachable from the global Internet. Over the course of roughly half an hour, the routes to 40 of 59 networks were withdrawn from the global routing table."

PC Gamer is reporting that Stainless Games, the developers of the original Carmageddon and Carmageddon 2: Carpocalypse Now have reacquired the rights to the series and are developing a new title in the franchise, Carmageddon: Reincarnation.
It’s been fourteen years since the original Carmageddon and eleven years since The Death Race 2000(not made by Stainless) marked the end of the series.
Carmegeddon: Reincarnation is scheduled for a 2012 release.
No guesswork or rumors here! Straight from the horse’s mouth, here is Microsoft demoing Windows 8 using a touch interface:
