Dragon Ball Z Blu-Ray Production “Suspended”

dragonball z blurayAnime News Network is reporting that they have confirmation from Funimation that the restoration and production Dragon Ball Z for Blu-ray has been suspended:

“Funimation said that it had produced the Blu-ray editions of the series due to fan demand; however, the company explained that "due to technical challenges of restoring from the original film frame by frame, we are unable to continue these releases by way of this process." The company added it will re-evaluate its process of creating these Blu-rays and will research more efficient methods of restoration.”
As it turns out, remastering the 23 year old cartoon from it’s original 16mm film reels and re-recording it a 1080p digital format is very time consuming and expensive, especially in a world where physical media grows a little more ‘quaint’ every day. Go figure. The first, and apparently only, volume of Dragon Ball Z – Level 1.1 Blu-ray debuted in November 2011 at a MSRP of $35 for 17 episodes. At the time of this writing, Amazon currently lists this volume for 16.50
