Changing of the Super Heroic MMO Guard: City of Heroes to Close while Marvel Heroes Prepares Beta

cityofheroesSad news for players of world’s first super hero themed MMORPG waited for them in the official City of Heroes’ blog post for August 31st. After eight years and becoming the first MMO to give users the tools to create their own missions, the venerable super powered game has decided to close its doors.

From Paragon Studios:

"To our Community,

Thank you. Thank you for your years of support. You've been with us every step of the way, sharing in our challenges, encouraging us to make City of Heroes better, more than everyone else thought it could be. We couldn't have come this far without you. I implore you all, focus on the good things of CoH and Paragon Studios. Don't dwell on the "how" or the "why", but rather join us in celebrating the legacy of an amazing partnership between the players and the development team.

Thank you, and I'll see you in the skies, one last time.”

Users have started a petition on change.org in hopes that NCsoft will reverse their decision and keep the virtual world online. The petition already has reached more than 14,000 signatures at the time of this writing.

Yet the news isn’t all bad for fans of men in tights punching things. Gazillion’s upcoming MMO Marvel Heroes has announced they are preparing for the launch of a closed beta test phase effective October 1st. Beta participants will be selected in part from anyone signing up for their newsletter on the official website.

Um… okay, so that’s not really a substitute for City of Heroes. Well, at least Champions and DC Universe are still running. And they’re both free!
