EA’s Old Republic Giveaway has Some Odd Terms

darth malgus premium contestEA is running a sweepstakes where you could win a Sith lord statue! In support of their soon to be free-to-play MMORPG, The Old Republic, the largest game publisher in the West has teamed up with collectables caster Sideshow Toys to raffle off a model minion of Star Wars badness. Eventually.

Mercifully eschewing a page of fine print (although there’s one of those too), EA and Sideshow have graciously decided  to post their legal lunacy on the main contest page. What lunacy? How about the fact that the prize in question doesn’t exist yet, but should sometime next year.

“The Darth Malgus Premium Format Figure will not be shipped to the winner of the Star Wars: The Old Republic Darth Malgus Premium Format Figure Giveaway until it arrives in our warehouse, which is estimated to be in March 2013.”

The deadline for entries is September 24th, 2012.

Well, at least I just just use my EA or Old Republic account to join the fun, right? No such luck. You see, the contest is actually from Sideshow, not EA. This is rather puzzling when:

“The chosen winner must be a registered user of StarWarsTheOldRepublic.com' before the close of this contest.”

Guess who the latest unsecured company to get get access to your account data is? Yep, love that whole “share your information with 3rd parties” clause in the terms of service. Ironic for a game that features more security than my online banking.

But wait! There’s more! You get to pay shipping!

“All winners agree to pay shipping on any prizes granted by Sideshow Collectibles during any contest or giveaway. International winners (including EU regions) will be responsible for VAT, duties or import fees on the shipment of their prize that may be assessed by their governments.”

How much is shipping? Sideshow says the figure in question is 20” tall and weighs 8lbs. Just what overseas contestants want to hear. And, really, giving away a $375 prize and charging for shipping is just tacky. Oh, yeah, don’t forget the VAT on your £200 prize.

Anywho, if you plan on paying for a game thru September that will be free before the end of the year, why not head on over to Sideshow Collectibles and enter for your chance to pre-order an obscure video game villain on the cheap. <insert Dark Side joke here>

  2. This is a whole different figure than the one in the CE. More of a bigger, better, absurdly priced thing.
